Launching of the BSWM MAP PORTAL marks the 63rd anniversary celebration of BSWM
One of the highlights of the agency’s 63rd anniversary celebration last June 5 was the launching of the BSWM MAP PORTAL (bswm.maps.da.gov.ph). Ms. Carol Geron of World Bank, Assistant Secretary Allan Umali of the Department of Agriculture, Ms Sally Bulatao, DA-Office of the Secretary, Dr.Silvino Tejada, Director and Dr. Gina Nilo, OIC-Assistant Director of the agencyled the ceremonial activity. The agency through the map portal was recognized by the Office of the President, under Secretary Edwin Lacierda and the Department of Budget as an OPEN DATA CHAMPION in response to President Aquino’s advocacy on good governance and transparency.
The website features a library of over 2500 maps of the agency. All featured maps are product of the 15 years of fieldworks, validation and consultations with stakeholders concerned with the rational utilization of our natural resources. These maps provide baseline information that is valuable for planning purposes including potential agricultural development and strategic prioritization of commodities.
The map portal was realized through the generous funding support from the World Bank Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (WB-GFDRR) and in collaboration with the IT infrastructure assistance from the Department of Agriculture Information Technology Center for Agriculture and Fisheries (DA-ITCAF) as host of the system.
The design and development were meticulously worked out by both BSWM Integrated Soil Resources Information Services (ISRIS) group and DA-ITCAF staff, including the tedious review of individual maps that comprise the geodatabase.
